Um, HAM radio? What is it? What is it doing on your computer?

yeah it's a handheld ham radio :) It's on my computer only 'cause my computer also happened to be in front of me!

Do people still use them? I thought they kinda went out of style with the CB Radio.

Amazingly! Mostly super-nerdy hobbyists and the occasional crazy cold war leftover... I think I qualify as the former.

Oh right, you're only one day into the future :)

Sweet! And congratulations, if this means you are newly licensed!

thanks! I did the technician test a couple weeks ago. Hoping to get my general at the February Hamcram.

Are you active?

Not at all, sadly. I did the tech plus test (not sure what they're calling that these days - tech with 5 WPM code) and never went any farther getting my code speed up. Used to be active on the local repeaters quite a bit, until cell phones got cheap. :) Then I got lazy!

Tech Plus went away a few years ago, and now there's no code test for any of the licenses! The Tech test now is completely trivial, just a few questions about safety and power relationships and you're done. I'm told the General test is still a bit difficult though...

It's such an interesting culture, I wish I'd gotten into it when I was a kid (ie before cell phones got cheap!).

i've been very happy with my VX-7RB

turns out there are a few local 222MHz and 50MHz which are, for whatever reason, becoming more active lately ... most other radios don't have coverage on these bands (222MHz is unique to north america and 50MHz on FM isn't very active in many cities) but these radios cover all this.

Re: i've been very happy with my VX-7RB

yeah I'm really impressed with it overall, especially for the size.

But the 8R isn't without its frustrations... like, it has a built-in TNC for its APRS support, but there's no serial connection to use the -8R as a TNC from a computer. (You can still attach a TNC to it (or use a softmodem) but their lack of forethought there is annoying.)
