mongol rally 2010.
It's a long-shot, but is anyone (or know anyone(s) who would) be interested in joining me on the ridiculous adventure of the Mongol Rally in 2010? Fairly likely we can get a spot.

For those not familiar, the Mongol Rally is an absolute batshit crazy plan whereby you start in London and drive to Mongolia, during which hilarity ensues.

Companion(s) should have a sufficient set of these improbable qualities (in no particular order):
  • financially solvent;
  • crazy;
  • willing to commit with 51%+ certainty before Saturday;
  • flexible work schedule; and
  • resourceful to an almost inhuman level.
To be clear: I am serious. Roadtrips are serious business, even in Central Asia.

Alas, I lack the certainty.

For you I'd make an exception! I could go as low as 15% :)

Well, I can certainly provide that much. :)

I would love to finally meet you. In Kazakhstan.

That would, indeed, be very cool.

Mate, you are crazy :-)

I'll think about it

I'd need a few years to organize it, but that looks like a hell of a lot of fun. One of these days...

I once interviewed a Spanish team who participated and, despite their preparation, the team didn't succeed. Part of the problem was that they were using Straight Vegetable Oil instead of gasoline.

Nevertheless, it isn't a simple road trip...

My wife went to Mongolia this year. I think if she wasn't going to Namibia at that time that we'd be car shopping... Very cool!

Can we go in an Edsel? Studebaker Lark?

Hi! I read this invitation through Caladri's post. I'm pretty sure we've never met. I am really considering doing this. I am crazy and resourceful, with a flexible work schedule. Can you tell me your definition of "financially solvent"? I read through the rally's site and it sounds like most people manage to do this cheaply with fundraising....

Hi! Nice to meet you.

I mainly just mean if something goes wrong we'd have the resources to fix it. Resourcefulness only works with resources and sometimes money is the only way out! I wouldn't want either of us to get stuck with thousands of dollars of debt 'cause something really bad and unforeseen happened.

Not saying you need to be a millionaire (I certainly am not!), just that you have enough to cover bailing yourself out of a khazak jail :). Know what I mean?

Of course the plan would be to cover foreseen expenses beforehand!

A couple of points worth noting:
o) Expect vehicle insurance (which you need in Europe) in the UK to be expensive (you're not really in their system and will basically get 18yo boy racer rates) and inconvenient (we had to pre-pay for 3 months and didn't get a chance to call to cancel so we could get back the bulk of our money.)
o) You need travel insurance (ideally from the people who do it for especially crazy types) more than the Brits who've done it do; repatriation to the US is a lot more expensive.

Would you like to meet to talk about this more over coffee? When do you need an answer?
midendian From: midendian Date: September 4th, 2009 02:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
Need to sign up (and lay down 1100$US) at 1800h today unfortunately.

So I think I need to bail on my own team... This needs more than three days thought I gave it this year! Sorry.

Maybe caladri would be open to adding a second car to their team?

So let's start planning and fundraising for 2011!
mizemm From: mizemm Date: September 4th, 2009 08:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
Okay, I understand. :)
caladri From: caladri Date: September 4th, 2009 09:27 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wouldn't it be noon Saturday? That's four whole days! :)
caladri From: caladri Date: September 5th, 2009 10:15 am (UTC) (Link)
I would, for what it's worth, but 1 team 1 car; I am tempted to bribe someone to sign up for a team who will take on ringers of my suggestion, but I don't know if that'd work for me.

If you're still up and can be subsidized in to doing it at less than the full cost of a place, I'd probably do so if you might actually go :)
darquis From: darquis Date: September 4th, 2009 08:55 am (UTC) (Link)
Damn, it's tempting! [Plus you could use someone who knows Russian...]
midendian From: midendian Date: September 4th, 2009 02:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
You would be awesome to go with! And that russian thing would be useful too :)

Now this I would do! My passport is ready! I meet all criteria, except the work schedule thing :(. I need to retire!
